How To Taste Wine

Even though there is a lot of pretension about wine tasting, taking out a few moments to taste wine can really enhance your enjoyment of the wine. Also some wines you have been knocking back may not fair so well on closer inspection.
First look at the appearance of the wine. Pour some in a glass and hold it against a white background. What is the colour beyond just red or white? Different varieties have different hues, clarity and brilliance.
Smell your wine. Our sense of smell is very important in perceiving the overall flavour of the wine and continues to play a part whilst we are drinking it. Swirl the wine around the glass to enhance the aromas. Put you nose the glass and really smell the wine. Whatever you smell should be pleasant and, if you like, you can note down your impressions.
Finally take a sip. Think about your initial impression. Take another sip, then swirl the wine around in you mouth drawing a bit of air, this allows you taste the flavours more fully. Think about what you are tasting. Finally swallow and think about what is called the finish or how long the flavour lasts after you have swallowed. Now the initial tasting is finished what was your overall impression. Did you like it? Would you buy this wine again?
Finally relax and enjoy the rest of the bottle.
