Pinot Noir in Australia

Pinot Noir grapes are grown around the world but the origins are in Burgundy, France. Australia produces very little Pinot Noir compared with the most popular red varieties of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Pinot Noir grapes make up about 1% of varieties in Australia. However, Pinot Noir wine has a reputation for being the finest. It’s difficult to make well, and as with all good quality wines, the yield is low. It needs a cooler climate so in Australia the best Pinot Noir regions are in the cool climate Victorian wine growing regions such as the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula. Adelaide Hills and Tasmania are also notable Pinot Noir regions.
There can be a broad range of flavours and aromas associated with Pinot Noir but generally speaking Pinot Noir is a light to medium bodied wine which is light red in colour and very fragrant. Aromas are typically those of small berry fruits such as cherries and raspberries.
