Organic Wine

Organic wine is becoming more popular in Australia with better quality wines available and more choice. The reasons are primarily to do with the health benefits and the reduction in environmental impact.
Wine that is certified organic means that accreditation has been gained to indicate that the grapes grown for the production of the wine were grown according to the principles of organic farming which means no artificial chemicals in the form of fertilisers, pesticides, fungicides or herbicides. Although many more wine growers are adopting organic methods, the certified organic wines are officially recognised as such.
One misconception is that organic wine means that no preservatives have been added to the wine. This may indeed be the case but the labelling of certified organic wine in Australia allows for added preservatives although at about 50% of the level of what is allowed for non organic wines.
It is possible to buy preservative free wines and wines with no preservatives added. The most common preservative in wine is Sulphur Dioxide which is used to protect against oxidation and unwanted bacteria. Some Sulphur Dioxide may still be present in wines with none added as a natural product of fermentation.
There are growing opportunities now if you want to buy organic wine online in Australia. Dan Murphy’s online store has a selection of Green Wine which includes certified organic wine, preservative free and no added preservative wine, and biodynamic wine which is organic and has also been grown according to a holistic system of regenerative agriculture.
Other online wine merchants stock organic wine when there are good deals available. We like the Angoves Organic Chardonnay and Angoves Organic Shiraz Cabernet.
