Young Barossa winemakers are doing well when it comes to their talents being recognised. Last year Barossa-based winemaker Anna Pooley won the Wine Society’s 2011 Young Winemaker of the Year Award. This year, 3 Barossa winemakers are in the final ten; Hentley Farm’s Andrew Quin, Orlando’s Dan Swincer and Troy Kalleske from the Kalleske family winery.

Troy Kalleske makes organic wine and believes that this gives an advantage.
“I’d like to think so, I do know that generally people comment on the fruit harmony of our wines and that is definitely part of the organics and the way we make our wines with natural ferments and tannins,” he said.

Langhorne Creek is situated in South Australia less than an hour away from Adelaide and has a reputation mainly for high quality, bold, red wines. The Cabernet Sauvignon is the signature wine from Langhorne Creek and is fragrant with classical mint, chocolate and blackcurrant flavours.
The climate and soil make for ideal wine growing conditions. The days are typically warm and sunny but combined with cool breezes from Lake Alexandria. The soil is fertile, fine and deep.

Langhorne Creek is traditionally a red wine growing district and about 70% of the vineyard plantings are cabernet sauvignon and shiraz. The red wine is consistently high quality, full flavoured with delicate, soft tannins. Typical characteristics of the cab sav are mint, blackcurrant and chocolate. The shiraz has characteristic plum, chocolate and earthy flavours. The red wine from Langhorne Creek is excellent for drinking straight away but also has good cellaring potential.

Although red wines are predominant, the cool climate of Langhorne Creek also facilitates the production of crisp, clean white wines. Chardonnay is the biggest variety but the region is also gaining a reputation for good Verdelho.

Bleasdale in Langhorne Creek is the oldest winery in continuous production there and was established in 1850. More recently wineries such as Wolf Blass and Lindemans have put Langhorne Creek on the map as well as excellent boutique wineries such as Lake Breeze.

Langhorne Creek is a lesser known wine region just south of Adelaide, famous for red wines and in particular cabernet sauvignon and shiraz. A wine industry was established there in the 1850s and at the time Bleasdale was the only winery there. Wolf Blass and Lindemans contributed to the growth of the region by establishing vineyards there and they have been joined by other big players as well as boutique wineries.

Langhorne Creek has been selected as the Wine Partner for the South Australian Premier’s Food Industry Awards. It’s the first time a wine region is the partner rather than an individual winery. The Event Manager commented that this gave more brands a chance to be promoted by the event.

“The Langhorne Creek Wine region has some excellent wines and brands and by choosing a total region as our wine partner even more of those great brands are promoted,” she said.

“I wanted to give one of our State’s exceptional wine regions the opportunity to promote not only their region, but also their iconic brands.”

The Yarra Valley wine region surrounds the Yarra River in Melbourne. It is a long established wine region with a cooler climate. The region is renowned for Pinot Noir in particular but also excellent chardonnay and sparkling wines. There are over 70 wineries in the Yarra Valley and it is a top tourist destination.

Pinot wines are notorious for being difficult to make and yet they are amongst the most popular wines in the world. They are light to medium bodied, very aromatic with black cherry, raspberry and other fruit notes.

Typical characteristics of Yarra Valley Pinot Noir are fruit flavours, berries through to cherries, spices such as cinnamon and mint, and earthy notes such as mushrooms and “forest floor” characters.

It’s one of the easiest red wines to match with food and goes well with white meat, mild creamy cheese such as brie or camembert or even fish.

A great Pinot Noir wine deal on offer currently is the Punt Road Little Rebel Yarra Pinot Noir 2006 from WineMarket. It’s from award winning winemaker, Kate Goodman. You would normally pay $23.99 a bottle so at $14.99 it’s great value.

We keep an eye on Pinot Noir wine specials from Australian merchants online as well as great examples of Yarra Valley Pinot Noir.

The Margaret River wine region is relatively young. It was established in 1967 and yet it is now one of the premier wine producing regions in the world and is responsible for over 20% of the premium wine market in Australia. The area stretches just over 100km and is home to well over 100 wine producers, most of them small, boutique wineries.

The climate and overall growing conditions are ideal for producing high quality fruit with intense flavor. The climate is much like that of the Mediterranean. It is relatively dry with no extreme temperatures and ideal humidity.

Consequently the Margaret River region is famous for wines with a great depth of colour, intense fruit flavours, length and elegance.

Margaret River chardonnay is hailed as amongst the finest in the world. The region is also famous for Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

They also have a shiraz blend in their Scrubby Rise range of wines. This is a blend of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon which is a very popular match but with the addition of 15% Petit Verdot. It’s a match that makes an easy drinking, everyday red.

Heathcote in central Victoria is famous for producing exceptional quality Shiraz wine. The recognition is worldwide and winemakers in the area have achieved international success with their wines. The high quality of the shiraz produced in the Heathcote region is partly down to the ideal terroir. This is the combination of soil, sun, rain and micro climates producing unique conditions in an area. Heathcote has a reliable, dry, mild climate and has had a succession of drought years producing a low yield but superb quality shiraz.

The region is famous for the ancient Cambrian soil on the slopes of the Mt Camel range. This red soil is known as the Heathcote Greenstone Belt and it gives the Heathcote shiraz its unique characteristics.

This unique character is a wine that is unusually deep in colour and is complex, rich and velvety. Flavours are dark cherry, plum and black pepper spice. Fine tannins give texture and length. Heathcote shiraz ages superbly.

It’s possible to pick up Heathcote Shiraz online at a discounted price now and again. Check our current Heathcote Shiraz wine deals.

There are a couple of good reasons to give McLaren Vale a mention today.

The Sea and Vines Festival is coming up. It’s on during the June long weekend, 7-8 June. 23 wineries from the McLaren Vale region will match their wines to seafood dishes.

Secondly there are some great McLaren Vale wine specials available this week.

WineMarket have Hesketh Usual Suspects McLaren Vale Shiraz 2005 at less than half price.

Winemakers Choice have a 12 bottle case of Mastermind Merlot 2008 with savings of $84.

McLaren Vale, just south of Adelaide, is one of Australia’s oldest winemaking regions and most of the award winning wines from the region are from 100 year old vines. The start of the winemaking industry in McLaren Vale is considered to be around 1873 when Thomas Hardy purchased the Tintara winery.

The climate of the region makes McLaren Vale on of the most reliable, consistent wine growing areas. The region gets good winter rainfall and long dry summers.

The most notable wine variety produced in McLaren Vale is shiraz although the region is also renowned for other varieties including cabernet sauvignon, Grenache and chardonnay. The shiraz from Mclaren Vale is often referred to as being amongst the best shiraz in the world. The terroir produces intense flavoured fruit which is a deep purple, almost black colour. Aromas are liquorice, spice and violets and classic McLaren Vale shiraz has intense, mouthfilling flavours which include plum, spice, black pepper, liquorice and dark chocolate.
