Heathcote is in central Victoria and is ideal winemaking country particularly for shiraz wine. The wine industry there is much younger relatively than areas such as the Barossa Valley but the advantage of this is that prices are generally lower.
The area is made up of sub areas each with their own characteristics. The most sought after for shiraz is the Cambrian earth about 40km long and 2 km wide which runs through the Heathcote township. The Cambrian soil is ancient, formed from Cambrian rocks over 500 million years old and the land is ideally positioned in terms of overall conditions for producing shiraz. The shiraz wine produced in the Heathcote region has a very distinctive flavour and complexity and is highly regarded.
